There's something deeply satisfying about holding a pen that was once a living tree — and when that tree is native New Zealand Kauri, Rimu, or Rewa-Rewa, it becomes something truly special. At Poppa's Wooden Creations in Whangarei, every pen in our native timber collection is hand-turned by Adrian, one piece at a time, using some of New Zealand's most treasured timbers.
The Timbers We Use
Each timber brings its own personality to the pen:
Kauri is one of the world's most sought-after and ancient woods. With its warm golden-blonde grain and extraordinary rarity, a Kauri pen is nothing short of a collector's piece. Each one carries the story of a tree that may have stood for hundreds of years.
Rewa-Rewa is famous throughout New Zealand for its jaw-dropping lace-like honeycomb grain — unlike anything else in the world. No two Rewa-Rewa pens are ever the same, making each one completely unique to its owner.
Rimu is a classic NZ native with deep, warm reddish-brown tones and a fine, even grain. It's the timber of New Zealand's heritage homes and furniture — and it writes just as beautifully as it looks.
The Pen Range
Our collection includes a variety of styles and fittings to suit every taste:
- Kauri Chrome Click Pen — warm golden kauri grain with polished chrome fittings
- Kauri Gold Touch Stylus Pen — ancient kauri paired with gold fittings and a soft-touch stylus tip, perfect for touchscreens
- Rewa-Rewa Antique Bronze Ball Pen — the extraordinary lace grain of Rewa-Rewa with a larger barrel and antique bronze hardware
- Rewa-Rewa Chrome Black Chrome Click Pen — bold chrome and black chrome fittings with the unmistakable Rewa-Rewa pattern
Every pen uses quality ballpoint or stylus mechanisms and is finished to a smooth, comfortable grip. They write as well as they look.
The Perfect Gift
Our native timber pens are one of the most popular gifts we make — and it's easy to see why. They suit anyone who appreciates something made with care, from writers and artists to teachers, executives, and anyone who's simply tired of plastic.
Each pen arrives ready to gift, and because no two pieces of timber are ever the same, your pen is one of a kind in the truest sense.
Made Right Here in Whangarei
Every pen is turned by hand in our workshop at 102 Kiripaka Rd, Whangarei. We source our native timbers responsibly and craft each piece with the same attention to detail that goes into every product we make — whether it's a wooden toy for a toddler or a pen for a lifetime of writing.
When you buy a pen from Poppa's Wooden Creations, you're not just buying a writing instrument. You're buying a piece of New Zealand, made by hand, built to last, and destined to be passed down.
